Note: The extent to which the “real” Peter
McCurtin wrote books or was a pseudonym used by George Harmon Smith and
others is unclear, and the authorities differ. For example, Ralph Hayes
used “Peter McCurtin” as a pseudonym for at least four Jim
Rainey, Death Dealer, titles per Crime Fiction II, which lists McCurtin
as a house pseudonym in this regard. The date of birth is also in doubt:
Library of Congress lists McCurtin’s birth year as 1935; Crime Fiction
II does not list a year. The best authority we have found is an article
by David Whitehead, “Peter
McCurtin — Question mark of the
Old West,” [viewed December 6, 2009], which gives dates of 1929-1987. We do not
attempt to list all McCurtin’s real or pseudonymous books here,
omitting many western and adventure titles, and writings under (other?)
house pseudonyms Bruno Rossi and Frank Scarpetta.
